Trauma Entanglement Theory

A psycho-spiritual theory of childhood trauma

The core claim Hypothesis
Childhood experiences set a baseline state of consciousness, and that baseline governs how one experiences life.

Where the field is stuck

Three open problems in trauma treatment

Trauma care has moved from the mind to the body, and both have good evidence behind them. Three findings still sit unexplained.

01 · Nonresponse

39%

Weighted average nonresponse to first-line psychological treatments for PTSD, across 86 randomized trials.

Semmlinger et al., 2024

02 · Durability

1 yr+

Rarely measured. Very few trials follow people past a year, and for body-oriented work durability has barely been measured at all.

van de Kamp et al., 2023

03 · Dodo Bird Verdict

Everyone has won

Bona fide therapies of very different modalities produce roughly equivalent outcomes.

Wampold, 2001
The proposal

Neither mind nor body is the base layer

If the body keeps the score, this paper asks what the score is written in. The answer it proposes is a state of consciousness: an Individual Field that contracts under early adversity and can expand again.

Larger Field Individual Field Fight hyperarousal Freeze hypoarousal

Individual Field

Contracted

What this looks like

Narrow window of tolerance. Fear predictive coding, survival-oriented. Little exchange with anything outside itself.

Figures 1 and 3, adapted. Drag the baseline to move the Individual Field between its contracted and expansive states, and watch exchange with the Larger Field open as it expands.
The layers

Body, mind and subtle body

If mind and body are both expressions of consciousness, they are not two things but two densities of one thing. Neither a tight chest nor an anxious thought is the trauma itself. They are places where it can be observed. Select a layer to explore it.

Subtle body Mind Body

Steam, water and ice are a single substance in three states. Read by density, the body is the ice.

FHEES™ stage

Change the thoughts alone and the body often drags a person back. Change the body alone and the mind often does the same. Each FHEES™ stage below moves outward from density toward subtlety.

The framework

Feel, Heal, Entangle, Endure, Synchronize™

Most trauma treatment does its best work in the first two stages, inside the session. FHEES™ identifies three additional stages necessary to keep the new baseline after sessions.

Stage 01

Feel

Body

Release and regulate emotion, attune to the body, and widen the window of tolerance so feelings can move through instead of being suppressed.

Evidence baseSomatic Experiencing, trauma-sensitive yoga, DBT and ACT, neurofeedback, compassion meditation.
Stages 1 to 3 · typically within the session Stages 3 to 5 · between and after sessions
How to read this work

Where the evidence ends and the hypothesis begins

The paper keeps three kinds of material visibly separate, and says plainly which is which. Readers who reject the philosophical lens may still find the findings intact.

Established research

102 references, including 74 peer-reviewed journal articles

Peer-reviewed studies, meta-analyses and reviews, cited conventionally and tied to specific claims.

Philosophical lens

The traditions behind it

Jungian psychology, Vedic philosophy, Indigenous wisdom, Abrahamic lineages, Huayan Buddhism and consciousness studies, highlighted in shaded panels.

Hypothesis

Speculative theory

The consciousness baseline, the Larger Field of consciousness, and the interpretation of “synchronicities” are flagged as original proposals that go beyond current evidence.

Important: The theoretical FHEES™ framework describes a progression that becomes available once a person is stable and resourced enough to do it. It is not a treatment protocol and does not replace clinical care.
